About Nemaura

The delivery of therapeutic agents into the human body is a critical part of the drug development process, and has remained a very important area of research throughout the history of medicine. The delivery of therapeutic agents was originally limited to oral administration of compacted powders, and liquids and aqueous based solutions without any real assessment of the pharmacokinetic profiles or therapeutic efficacy levels attained. A major breakthrough in drug delivery came in the 1860’s with the advent of the hypodermic needle which provided a means for instant administration of drugs into the blood stream for immediate therapeutic onset. The choice of delivery route is generally constrained by the nature of the therapeutic entity and affect of physiological conditions and metabolic processes the drug may be subjected to prior to reaching its desired destination or prior to reaching the therapeutic blood concentration levels. The drug delivery market is therefore not just relevant to new therapeutic entities, but also marketed drugs that could benefit from delivery systems that improve drug targeting, reduce side-effects, or allow for sustained or controlled release over prolonged periods thereby improving efficacy. As a result the drug delivery market is rapidly growing and expected to be worth in the region of $80 billion by 2010 in the US alone of which transdermal drug delivery market is expected to be worth $16.3 billion.

Nemaura Pharma is based in the University town of Loughborough , in the UK , and is developing a number of drug delivery systems that will enhance the benefits of new and existing drug molecules through reformulation and re-design of their modes of delivery.

Its lead product, the patented Memspatch ® transdermal drug delivery platform and patented skin delivery formulations provide a means of delivering drugs through the skin that would otherwise not penetrate the skin sufficiently for therapeutic effect. The key advantages of transdermal drug delivery is the avoidance of first-pass metabolism of the drug which can lead to serious side effects, and the avoidance of gastric irritation and systemic side effects associated with numerous drugs. Additionally the dose of a drug can be reduced by up to 95% in many cases when converted from the oral form to transdermal. The Memspatch ® provides a platform for the delivery of a wide range of drugs either with active facilitation, or passive delivery through formulation enhancements, as well as chronotherapeutic and on-demand drug delivery.

Nemaura is developing a pipeline of both own branded generic products that offer both clinical and commercial advantages, as well as co-development of molecules for delivery using Nemaura’s platforms technologies.
