Memspatch®
Micropatch ™

The Memspatch ® Transdermal Drug Delivery Platform

Background

Over the last 30 years numerous delivery systems have been developed and routes of administration investigated for drugs. The transdermal route is one that has received a lot of attention over the last couple of decades primarily due to the ease of administration, and the avoidance of the harsh acidic conditions of the stomach, and first-pass metabolism of the drug by the liver prior to reaching the general circulation. However, a major limitation has been that the technologies available for bulk processing and mass production did not allow for active control over delivery profiles, and instead those drugs incorporated into transdermal systems relied upon the passive diffusion of the drug through the various layers of the skin prior to being absorbed by the capillaries and blood vessels. Nanotechnology and Microsystems technology have opened up a whole host of opportunities in the drug delivery field, creating what can be described as a paradigm shift in the way drug delivery systems research and development is approached. These technology platforms provide the means for attaining very high levels of accuracy, precision and sophistication, through engineered innovations as oppose to formulation oriented solutions, for drug delivery in general, and transdermal systems in particular.

General benefits of Transdermal Drug Delivery

  • Ability to achieve sustained blood drug concentrations, over prolonged periods of up to a week
  • Predictable pharmacokinetic profiles can be achieved without the sometimes extreme fluctuations that are an inherent part of oral drug delivery
  • Discontinuation of therapy is immediate upon removal of the transdermal system.
  • Very easy to self-administer compared to injections, i.e., intravenous or intramuscular routes which require a qualified nurse or physician to administer.
  • The first-pass effect, metabolism of the drug during its passage through the liver prior to entering the systemic circulation, is avoided, reducing side-effects
  • It is a non-invasive mode of drug delivery
  • Patient activity is not restricted during use of most transdermal systems
  • Improved patient compliance due to reduced frequency of administration
  • Drugs inactivated by gastrointestinal enzymes or gastrointestinal pH, (e.g., estrogens, testosterone, nitroglycerine) can be delivered directly into systemic circulation using the transdermal route
  • Reduced side-effects associated with direct delivery into the systemic circulation, and low delivery dose

Key Features of the Memspatch ®

  • Drug loaded into patches in a manner and form which makes it significantly more efficient for permeating the skin, with reduced irritancy.
  • A wide range of molecules can be formulated for delivery using the system.
  • Timed control over drug exposure to the skin
  • Active facilitation of drug permeation
  • Patient control/on demand drug delivery
  • Complementary patented formulations
